Learning and Skills Mentors are found in the public, private and voluntary sectors in national and multinational organisations. Their role is focused on supporting people as they strive to achieve their learning and development goals, and they work with a variety of stakeholders across different levels to do this. As such, Learning and Skills Mentors must have excellent communication abilities and be patient, empathetic and able to adapt to changing circumstances and personalities in what is a varied and highly satisfying role.

End-Point Assessment Components

To complete their End-Point Assessment, Learning and Skills Mentor apprentices must achieve a pass or distinction in the following two components.

  • In the observation with questions, the End-Point Assessor observes the apprentice in their workplace as they complete their real day-to-day duties under normal working conditions. The assessment takes two hours in total (+10% variance). Of this time, 30 minutes are taken by the observation of a live mentoring session and a further 60 minutes taken by the Assessor viewing two 30-minute recordings of other mentoring sessions, which must take place and be recorded after gateway. The final 30-minute segment is allocated for the Assessor to ask at least five questions.

  • The professional discussion is a two-way discussion between the apprentice and their End-Point Assessor. The questions are based on the portfolio of evidence submitted at gateway, and the Assessor must ask at least eight in total. The component lasts 60 minutes (+10% variance).
